Why Is It Important to Brush Your Teeth at Least Twice a Day?

Do you really need to brush your teeth twice a day? The simple answer is yes. Yes, you do. But this would be an awfully short blog post if we left things right there! Sometimes, it’s the basic things we are neglecting that get us in trouble.

In recognition of National Brush Day on November 1st, let’s take a closer look at the importance of brushing your teeth twice daily so that you don’t require unnecessary dental procedures down the road.

National Brush Day

It’s no accident that National Brush Day falls on November 1st – one day after Halloween. Dental professionals are hoping to remind you of the importance of both adult and childhood oral health by highlighting the necessity of good tooth brushing habits. This is a great time to encourage your children to brush their teeth for two minutes, twice daily.

Brushing Daily

To maintain healthy teeth and an attractive smile, the American Dental Association advises everyone to use a soft-bristled toothbrush to brush their teeth at least twice a day. The shape and size of your toothbrush needs to make a good fit with your mouth so that you can reach every area easily.

Benefits of Daily Brushing

The benefits of brushing your teeth at least twice daily are undeniable. If you do not practice proper oral care, you may end up with problems like bad breath, tooth decay, gum disease, and an unattractive smile.

Here are a few of the benefits of brushing your teeth twice daily:

Prevents Tooth Loss

Failing to brush your teeth twice daily is like extending an invitation to plaque to accumulate and cause problems. A buildup of plaque can eventually lead to periodontal disease, popularly known as gum disease.

If plaque is not dealt with, it eventually hardens into tartar. This means that, at a minimum, you will require an extensive professional dental cleaning to remove all of that plaque and tartar so that you do not develop gum disease and risk losing your teeth.

Removes Stains

Failing to regularly brush your teeth will eventually lead to stains on them, having a negative impact on your attractive, confident smile. By brushing regularly, you can stay ahead of the stains and ensure that your teeth and smile remain healthy and free from disease.

Prevents Cavities

To prevent cavities, it is vital that you brush your teeth at least twice a day to remove any accumulation of plaque. The result is that you can prevent cavities and keep your teeth and smile white and healthy.

Brushing your teeth regularly also helps to dramatically reduce your chance of developing gum disease.

Saves You Money!

One very practical reason why it is so important to brush your teeth twice daily, at a minimum, is that preventative oral hygiene helps to prevent unnecessary and expensive dental procedures down the road.

So to avoid potential dental problems, like the need for fillings or root canal procedures, get back on track with your regular toothbrushing.

You should also be maintaining your regular dental exam and cleaning appointments so that we can spot any problems for you before they become larger ones.
